Dutch record company DJC Recording has used DPA 4021 compact cardioids and the DPA 4099 instrument mics on a concert tour for renowned jazz saxophonist Paul van Kemenade, who was touring with an all-star ensemble. Van Kemanade requested DPAs for the tour having previously used them in the studio with DJC’s Manuel Cooymans.
The mics were provided by Martin Goosen, senior sales manager at DPA’s Benelux distributor Amptec. Mixing the concert, Cooymans found the DPA 4021 to be the best choice for amplifying small ensembles for an audience. He followed Goosen’s suggestion to use the 4099 for its capabilities on noisy stages, and also found it provided a high level of volume, without noticeable coloration, in a loud, big band situation.
The choice of microphones made van Kemanade extremely happy, and from day one of the concert series he fell in love with the DPA sound all over again.
“They are lovely microphones that make amplified or recorded music much more truthful and rich, making both the musician’s and engineer’s life more simple and straightforward,” says Cooymans. “This is a real attribute for the music we perform."
“Artistically DPA works miracles, with a transducer which produces such a natural sound without having to apply any equalisation at all. This definitely raises the artistic level as the musicians can communicate better than ever.”
Cooymans also uses DPA 4006-TL omni, the 4011-TL cardioid, the 3521 stereo piano kit, and lots of miniature mics on tour as well in the studio.
